Adware

Adware Adware is a form of spyware that generates pop-up ads or banners on your computer while you surf the web. Adware programs track where you go and what you do on the internet and display ads based on your surfing habits. For example, if you go to a search engine and search for the latest reality TV programs, the adware programs capture these keywords and send you ads that are along the same line. You might start seeing ads for a web site where you can buy Survivor merchandise, get the new Kelly Clarkson CD, etc.

Adware programs are most often installed on your computer while you are downloading some kind of free application from the internet. Anytime you download something for free on the internet, you are running the risk in getting an adware program. Some examples of free applications where you might find adware include screen savers, background wallpapers, messenger programs, cartoon cursors, or even music or videos.

Even if you never download any programs from the internet you still run the risk of getting adware. Sometimes you can get adware on your computer without downloading a free application. This comes in the form of those annoying pop-up ads that say "click yes to win something"? Even if you close the window or decline the ad, you can still pick up an adware program from this.

Adware is probably the least malicious form of spyware out there. It will not damage your computer but it is very annoying because the pop-up ads are never ending.

If you want to prevent adware from being installed on your computer in the future, there are some things you can do. The Anti-Spyware Coalition (ASC) has made several helpful suggestions for protecting your computer from adware and other forms of spyware:

  • Only download files from web sites you trust.
  • Don't be tricked into thinking you have to click "no" or "cancel" to close a pop-up ad window. You can click the "x" in the upper corner or use the Alt+F4 option in Microsoft Windows.
  • Use available tools to detect and delete adware from your computer.
